Welcome to the wonderful community of Lanier County, Georgia!

Our county is known for Banks Lake, located in Lakeland, which is a National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and part of a much larger blackwater system. The refuge was established in 1985 for the protection and conservation of this unique environment as well as migratory and resident wildlife. Banks Lake is a natural pocosin or sink of ancient geologic origin.

Lanier County obtained its territory from portions of Berrien, Clinch and Lowndes counties in 1920. The county is named for poet Sidney Lanier. Our county seat is Lakeland; its name refers to the many lakes in that area which, along with the Alapaha River, have long made this county famous for good fishing.
